PLA's Role in Hong Kong / HK Pride Parade 2018

On Monday's Backchat, the PLA in Hong Kong. There are suggestions that the role of the PLA here is changing, with troops mobilised to help clear up after the typhoon, and talk of uniformed soldiers appearing on our streets. At least one poll suggests that a higher profile would be welcomed by the HK public. Last month also saw Chinese troops moved to other Asian countries via Hong Kong, with giant transport planes using Chek Lap Kok for the first time. At the same time there is a lot of talk about the 19 military sites, and 2700 hectares of land given to the PLA, which would be very welcome in our land-starved city. There is still controversy over the PLA dock on the Central Waterfront, and just how garrison law applies here. What do you think of the way the PLA has behaved over the last 20 years and is there room for a bit more freedom now? Is the land properly used, or is it actually idle, and a waste of space?
