Is Xi Jin-ping a dictator or a strong leader? / US Tariffs on Chinese Imports

On Friday's Backchat, is Xi Jinping a dictator or just a strong leader? 'Government, military, society and schools, north, south, east and west — the party is the leader of all' according to the President, and Xi is head of the Party, State and Army. With 'Xi Jinping Thought' inscribed in the constitution has all power become centralised in one man, and is that a dictatorship or a new era? What if that leader is benign , popular and works for the betterment of the country? Are the acquisition of titles and a cult of personality, the abolition of term limits as well as a crackdown on discussion or dissent actually signs of weakness? Does China need a strongman to ensure stability, continuity and certainty? Are there checks and balances in the system? Call us on 23388266 or email backchat@rthk.hk. After 9.20, U.S. sanctions on China.

Water Buffalos in Hong Kong / Trump's visit to China

    主持人:Hugh Chiverton and Mike Rowse

On Monday's Backchat, cattle. A plan to move stray cows from South Lantau to an uninhabited island has been resurrected, supported by some in the rural area, opposed by others. In the past three years, 70 cows have been moved to Sai Kung Country Park under a Capture-Sterilise-Relocate programme for stray cattle to control their population and reduce nuisance. Is this the right thing to do? Can the water buffalo of Lantau really remain, or are they a hazard? As Sai Kung develops will it be necessary to kick the cattle out of town? Call us on 23388266 or email backchat@rthk.hk. After 9.20, Donald Trump's adventures in Asia.
