Poverty Situation among the Ethnic Minorities / Dog Shelters facing a funding shortfall

On Thursday's Backchat we're talking about living standards of the territory's ethnic minorities. The Equal Opportunities Commission is calling on the government to take steps to improve the job prospects of people from minority communities after a recent report detailed high levels of poverty. Among South Asians, the poverty rate in 2016 stood at 23 percent. Most of those affected were working in low-paid jobs. A lack of proficiency in Chinese and English in some cases was cited as one factor. So what should be done to support people from ethnic minority groups in terms of education and employment? Leave a message, or email us with your thoughts at backchat@rthk.hk, or call us on 23388266. After 9.20, stray dog shelters face a funding shortfall.

    Presenters:Hugh Chiverton and Mike Rowse

On Monday's Backchat, cattle. A plan to move stray cows from South Lantau to an uninhabited island has been resurrected, supported by some in the rural area, opposed by others. In the past three years, 70 cows have been moved to Sai Kung Country Park under a Capture-Sterilise-Relocate programme for stray cattle to control their population and reduce nuisance. Is this the right thing to do? Can the water buffalo of Lantau really remain, or are they a hazard? As Sai Kung develops will it be necessary to kick the cattle out of town? Call us on 23388266 or email backchat@rthk.hk. After 9.20, Donald Trump's adventures in Asia.
