The Italian government has bailed out two failed banks in the Venice region using 5 billion euros of taxpayers’ money and has provisioned as much as 17 billion euros to cover for further losses from bad loans at Veneto Banca and Banco Popolare di Vicenza.
The Chinese banking regulator has told lenders to push forward with reforms including deleveraging, dealing with zombie firms and controlling housing price bubbles. Chinese blue chip stocks hit an 18-month high last week but there were big falls for conglomerates that have been actively purchasing overseas assets after the regulator ordered banks to check their exposure to them.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange has seen a 20% decline in IPOs in the first half of the year. According to Thomson Reuters, the exchange raised US$5.8 billion of IPO’s, seeing it slip to number three by value of worldwide IPOs, behind New York and Shanghai.
The new independent Insurance Authority comes into operation today and will be responsible for regulating all insurance companies and around 90,000 insurance salespeople here in Hong Kong.
