This week World Vibes has two musical themes on offer ! First a selection of some of today's new generation of Portuguese singers of New Trad 'Fado' balads ! And our featured album from the archives with a selection of the early 70's singles from Zimbabwe's 'Chimurenga' (Protest) singer, Thomas Mapfumo ! Click on 'World Vibes' above for more details.
Our first hour starts with our first of the new generation of singers of Fado, the traditional genre from Portugal which translates as "Fate", with established singer Joanna Amendoeiro, then we sample our first track from our featured album "The Chimurenga Singles 1976-1980" from "the Lion of Zimbabwe" Thomas Mapfumo. In between more songs from our featured album, we hear more Fado songs from relatively unknown Daniela Basilio, established singer Luisa Rocha (see photo), Fado experimentalist Ana Roque, one more track from our featured Shona language album before ending the first hour with award winning dancer and Fado singer Sylvana Peres. Sounds traditional and classic for all, enjoy !
Our second hour continues our two musical themes with up-and-coming Fado stylist Telmo Pires, blue blooded Fado traditionalist Maria Ana Bobone, more tracks from our featured album with social rebel Thomas Mapfumo, "Chimurenga" or "struggle", his first singles before releasing his first album ; intersperced we hear new Fado singers Ana Roque once more, Fado composer musician David Rossi, virtuoso duo Rota do Sul performing their Fado compositions, another track from Telmo Pires, ending the hour and show with one last protest "Chimurenga" song from exiled singer-songwriter Thomas Mapfumo. New trad to classics, it's all good to great, enjoy !
