Barbara Fei, one of the most notable sopranos in Hong Kong, has passed away before midnight on 2 January at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. She was 85.
Born in times of turmoil, Fei came to Hong Kong and started vocal lessons with Professor Chao Mei-pa in 1950. Later she went to France to refine her art in vocal music. She was one of the foremost musicians in the promotion of Chinese music in Hong Kong. She established the Allegro Singers more than 50 years ago, and the choir is still active on stage.
Fei is well-known for her contributions to the development of vocal art in Hong Kong. Radio 4’s presenter Kathy Lam did an in-depth interview with Ms Fei two months ago in the series ‘My Life in Music’, in which Ms Fei told us her own story. Radio 4 will broadcast this episode on 4 January at 8pm to pay tribute to Ms Fei, the arts practitioner who helped put the city on the cultural map.
