Fluoride: a Friend Who Wants to Harm You

It’s the poison, rebranded as a health aid. For generations, fluoride has been associated with healthy bones and teeth and added to water. Fluoride compounds are everywhere, from non-stick pans and pizza boxes to water resistant clothes. But it’s only good for us in quantities that are surprisingly easy to exceed. Above that, it can be toxic.

In 2010, the WHO classified flouride alongside asbestos and arsenic as one of the ten chemicals that poses the greatest risk to human health. And even at low doses, its toxicity is worrying scientists. It can remain in the body for years and is transmitted to babies via breastfeeding.

In this film, we reveal how, in the 1930s, fluoride was rebranded as being good for us and investigate some of the health risks associated with it.

Video Game Abuse is a Health Hazards

Do video games inspire violent behavior? A lot of psychologists and medical doctors focus on this study. About 10% of teenagers in Europe have problems arising from playing violent video games. Mike, being one of them, is keen on “First-person shooter games” because they are so realistic and immersive. The only goal of the games is to annihilate competitors. Now Mike is in the gaming addiction rehabilitation centre. Scientific studies indicate that even if these games do not turn players into killers, they clearly increase aggressiveness and diminish empathy This investigation recalls the 2012 Sandy Hook tragedy, where twenty very young children and six adults from a primary school were shot by a 20-year-old man who was addicted to video games. What lessons can the Americans learned from this tragedy that shocked the nation? How can teens be protected from violent video games? This documentary reports the open exchange of ideas between the Swiss and Americans.

      The Fertility Business

Pulling in more than half a billion Australian dollars each year, the fertility industry is booming. Yet evidence suggests that clinics are giving women false hope about their chances of pregnancy, while others don't even need the treatment. Profits only?

Grace is one of thousands of women who have put their faith in fertility treatments to help conceive a baby. “All our savings go to IVF… Then you get that negative pregnancy result”. After six unsuccessful rounds of IVF, the physical, emotional and financial toll is immense. There are concerns from industry insiders that some women undergoing IVF don't actually need it. Others warn against the practice of upselling - where women are sold expensive and unproven treatments. Furthermore, IVF has been found to be potentially harmful and has been linked to cancer. One fertility doctor worries that “with the commercialisation of IVF that’s occurring, there’s a pressure in every single clinic to use IVF more”.

In 2015, the WHO listed one of the additives in processed meats as carcinogenic. That same additive was nearly banned in America in the 1970s until lobbying from the meat industry discredited the scientists.

The programme reveals how to impede or halt regulations on certain additives and how lobbyists have been working in the shadows for decades. At the heart of this strategy are the scientists who collaborate and receive generous compensation for their studies that promote meat consumption.

In conjunction with this, those whose work finds that health risks are associated with processed meat consumption are being 'shot down'.
