Latest on HK Protests - The Economy

On today’s Backchat, we turn our focus to the local economy under the rally of protests. The business sector has pointed out that the retail and tourism industries in Hong Kong have been suffering and will take months to recover. The drop in tourists brings the worst downturn since the SARS outbreak in 2003, and Travel Industry Council says that the number of mainland China tour groups has dropped 90% compared to last year, making shopping malls and theme parks much emptier than they normally were. How do you see the situation and how long will it likely last? Should protestors be responsible for the downturn in the local economy? What should businesses especially retailers and hotels do?

Backchat This Week - Latest on the protests

    主持人:Hugh Chiverton and Danny Gittings

In the past week, more violent clashes at the weekend including fighting in North Point, and a women blinded in one eye by a projectile. Tear gas was used for the first time in the MTR.

The airport was closed by protestors on Monday, and on Tuesday angry crowds assaulted and detained two men they thought were mainland agents. There was a strong reaction to that development here and on the Mainland, and satellite pictures show paramilitary forces massing over the border. Donald Trump said that Xi Jinping can humanely solve the HK problem by meeting the protestors. And the Government has announced a $19 billion dollar mini-budget of handouts.

How did we get here? How do we get out of here?
