On Tuesday's Backchat, LGBTQ communities in Hong Kong; and bus fares.

17th May was the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

According to a recent CUHK survey 76% of local transgender respondents say they have faced rejection in different dimensions of social life, with 62% experiencing
victimisation.  What is the situation like for the LGBTQ communities in Hong Kong? Are feminists like JK Rowling who are concerned about preserving safe spaces for women, and who are sceptical about too easy gender recognition plans, transphobic?

From 9:15am-9:30am, we'll be discussing bus fares. Four bus operators were allowed to raise fares this year. But one company says it is still making massive losses and is likely to seek another fare increase. What do you think about it?

How welcoming is the west; trashing the countryside

    主持人:Hugh Chiverton and Danny Gittings

On Friday's Backchat, how welcoming is the west? - and trashing the countryside.

A surge in violence and hate crimes against Asian-Americans in the US has prompted rallies and a nationwide campaign - Against Asian Hate. What's triggering this? Covid? Hostility to a rising China?China's actions in Xinjiang and elsewhere? Underlying racism? Trump? How can it be stopped? And there are reports of big increases in harrassment of Chinese and other East Asians in the UK too.

At the same time the British government has unveiled a 43 million pound array of measures to help new BN(O) arrivals from Hong Kong settle in the country. The new Hong Kong UK Welcome Programme will focus on aspects including housing, employment, and education. The authorities will also use the money to establish 12 virtual hubs to help the newcomers access information on everyday matters.

Why is the Government taking these measures? Do they have popular support? Will they make a difference? From 9:20am-9:30am, ahead of this weekend we'll be talking about the trash problem in our parks and outlying islands after the easter break.
