Anti-smoking laws in the pipeline / Asian Winter Games: attack on Hong Kong ice hockey players

On Tuesday’s Backchat, we’re talking about the government’s plan to reduce the number of smokers in the city.

Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau said that his administration would table new anti-smoking laws at the Legislative Council in April, with the introduction of duty-paid labels and stiffer penalties on cigarette smuggling in the pipeline.
Authorities are also expected to get tougher on flavored cigarettes, with a potential blanket ban on the products. The ban on flavored cigarettes has long been pushed by anti-tobacco advocates, with research showing that young people using alternatives are at higher odds of becoming cigarette smokers.
However, some argue that smokers should be given alternatives. Some restaurants selling shisha have also expressed concern over the plans, arguing that such a move could cause a slump in sales.
Are we doing enough to stop younger people from getting into smoking? Are smokers given enough incentives to quit? And are we striking the right balance between public health and the economy?
After 9:45, we’ll get some reactions to a recent incident in which Hong Kong hockey team members got attacked by their Turkmen rivals.

Asian Financial Forum / Where are Asian economies headed? / Construction accidents

    主持人:Andrew Work and CM Chan

On Wednesday’s Backchat, we’re looking into where the Asian economies are headed, and whether businesses in the region are prepared for a potential return in US tariffs.

Speaking at the Asian Financial Forum, Financial Secretary Paul Chan urged Hong Kong businesses to seize opportunities in emerging markets, citing the Middle East, ASEAN, and the Global South as examples.
Last week, the minister led a 130-strong delegation to Jakarta and met with top ASEAN officials, discussing ways to facilitate trade with the 10-member block.
With looming uncertainties over US President-elect Donald Trump’s policy direction, some argue that now is the time for Asian economies to come together and strengthen multilateral cooperation. Can Hong Kong be the super-connector?
In the last part of the show, we discuss calls by labour groups to better protect industrial workers, following two separate construction accidents in less than 24 hours.
