Global shares have tumbled over fears of new Covid-19 lockdowns in Europe derailing the global economic recovery. In the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering a new national lockdown, as the number of new infections surge. He warned that daily coronavirus cases could rise to almost 50,000 within weeks if they continued on this trajectory.

President Trump has thrown into doubt a deal to restructure ownership of the popular video app TikTok, vowing to block any deal that allows its Chinese parent firm to retain any control. The latest setback has arisen because of differing accounts from Bytedance and Oracle over the ownership of the new firm, and who would be in control of the data and algorithms.

Several global banks, including HSBC and Standard Chartered, have been accused of allowing illicit international payments to flow through their accounts, despite being warned that they were suspicious. The claims were contained in a trove of thousands of US regulatory documents leaked to a consortium of international media.

US President Donald Trump and Congressional leaders have agreed to a US$2 trillion economic relief package, following five days of intense negotiations. It will be the largest US stimulus package in US history. However, passage of the bill in the Senate has been held up following a dispute between a group of Republican Senators and Bernie Sanders over some of the provisions in the bill. That caused stocks on Wall Street to fall back from their highs of the day.

The volume of imports into the US from China has collapsed by an “unprecedented” amount over the first two weeks of March, according to the latest figures from supply chain data company, Panjiva.
