Retail sales in Hong Kong fell short of expectations, rising 20.1% year-on-year in March. Economists had been expecting a rise of 34%, an improvement on the 30% growth seen in February. Sales, which were provisionally estimated at HK$27.6 billion, have risen for two consecutive months.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said interest rates may have to rise to prevent overheating in the US economy. She made her remarks as the Biden administration pushes its US$4tn of infrastructure and welfare spending plan.
HK Health Secretary Sophia Chan said yesterday that the government is planning to shorten the quarantine period for fully vaccinated people who fly back to Hong Kong. The government is also being urged to allow vaccinated people to travel to low-risk areas, and let them undergo a shorter quarantine period when they return to the city.
On today’s Money Talk we’re joined by Stewart Aldcroft of CitiTrust, Patrick Bennett from CIBC World Markets and RTHK’s International Economics Correspondent, Barry Wood.
