Sunday Escape

主持人:Paul Haswell

Paul and Carolyn (AKA the Pop Fugitives) are plotting to make their Escape every Sunday morning between 9.30 and 1.

Join them on the Sunday Escape to hear the best in new music, including three tracks from their album of the week, along with a carefully curated selection of classics, plus interviews with guests from all over the city and beyond. There’s also occasional live music in the studio and all the details of upcoming music events in Hong Kong.

On top of all that is “Biscuit Review”, now a Sunday Escape institution, a feature perfectly designed to complement the most eclectic mix of music on Radio 3.

Spiked Seltzers and Banana Skin Shoes

There’s some brilliant new music out this week, and on the Sunday Escape Paul and Carolyn will be looking at the best of the week's releases, with new singles from Misterwives and Public Practice and albums from The 1975, Tim Burgess and an album of the week from Badly Drawn Boy.

Joining the Pop Fugitives in the studio is Leigh Powrie of Dragon Water, which produces Hong Kong-brewed “spiked seltzers”, and Leigh will be talking about the inspiration for the drinks, how they are flavoured, and perhaps even biscuit pairings.

Because of course there’ll be biscuits, this week’s Extended Play, and all the usual nonsense as well. Tune in from 9.30am to 1pm on Sunday! .

The Sweet Escape

On this week’s Sunday Escape Paul and Carolyn return to look at the latest in new music, which is dominated by the release of Lady Gaga’s brand new album Chromatica, which is her first album since 2016. As well as talking about that the Pop Fugitives will play the best of the week’s new releases with a new album of the week and a look at some of the other great tracks from the last few months. There’ll also be a look at whether 2020 will be an unusual year for music given that so many musicians have been stuck indoors for most of it so far, and some of the albums Paul and Carolyn are most looking forward to.

On top all that, there’s a tribute to Jimmy Cobb, drummer on Kind of Blue, one of the best regarded jazz albums of all time. There’s also a classic Extended Play this week from Stevie Wonder, who celebrated his 70th birthday this month, and all the usual nonsense including an investigation into the perils of finding new biscuits during lockdown. Which will be proper in-depth reportage no doubt. Tune in live on Sunday from 9.30am to 1pm!

Sharks and Things

主持人:Paul Haswell

Among the brand new music on this week’s Sunday Escape you’ll find new tracks from Bon Iver, Sampa The Great, Sofi Tukker, Madeon and Of Monsters and Men. The week also sees new albums from Blood Orange, Africa Express, Palace, Penelope Isles and Banks, one of which will almost certainly be Paul’s album of the week.

Of course there’ll be plenty of older music to back up the new releases, with a good chance of an 80s slant now that Paul has finished watching Stranger Things 3. Talking of which, there’ll be a look at the Stranger Things 3 videogame tie-in, as well as Cadence of Hyrule, the new Legend of Zelda rhythm game on the Nintendo Switch.

If that wasn’t enough, it’s Shark Awareness Day on Sunday too, so Paul will be joined in the studio from 12 by Andrea Richey of the Hong Kong Shark Foundation to talk about shark conservation and what we can do to help, as well as the importance of sharks to our eco-system.
On top of that there’ll be all the usual nonsense and biscuits including a new feature “When Collaborations Go Wrong”. Tune in from 9.30 to1 pm!
