Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the '20s, '30s, '40s and '50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
A definite theme this week as we spin the 1924 Victor Male Chorus with a stirring rendition of Drink Drink Drink. In the late 50s there was huge hit for The Champs that still gets played at partyies to this day, but the version Colin is sharing is the top selling big band version in the UK of Tequila. We also feature a fantastic jam session from 1937, and a rocker from Lavern Baker.
The focus, this week is on The Cavern Club in Liverpool when it opened it’s doors as a jazz club in 1957, and the acts who performed there before The Beatles made the place world famous: Kenny Ball, big Bill Broonzy, Terry Lightfoot, The Merseysippi Jazz Band, Ackerman Bilk making his debut, and local skiffle group... The Quarrymen.

This week, Billy Murray joins Jean Goldkette and his orchestra with a four leaf clover from 1927, a big seller in the 1950s from a young man whose career lasted only 18 months, a properly “crazy” arrangement from Jeri Southern, and just as wild, we have the story of Robin Hood from King Louie! Plus, Colin takes a look at the year 1924.
