This week World Vibes commemorates in song the upcoming 31st Anniversary of the June 4th 1989 Beijing Massacre, with songs from Greater China : ie Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Mainland. That's two hours of Cantonese and Mandarin language songs, starting with the most recent songs and going back thrirty-one years in time to 1989. Click on 'World Vibes' above for more details.
Our first hour starts with the latest song released last year by ElectroPop duo Tat Ming Pair 達明一派 (HK), then through the 2010's with pro-democracy duo VIIV (HK), a live recording from missing and presumed sequestered Nanjing based singer-songwriter Li Zhi 李志 (PRC), a banned song from Shijiazhuang based band Omnipotent Youth Society 万能青年旅店 (PRC), then on to 2000's songs with a tribute to the students from post-punk Nanjing based P.K.14 (PRC), a tribute to the Goddess of Democracy from Li Zhi, a tribute to Ding Zilin's 丁子霖 Tiananmen Mothers from Wuhan based SMZB 生命之饼 (PRC), ending the first hour with the original recording of 'The Square' 广场 from Li Zhi. All the mainland songs are banned on the mainland, of course, enjoy.
Our second hour continues our sampling of some of the Greater China songs commemorating June 4th Beijing Massacre, now up to the 1990's, with a reaction to Beijing's censorship of the massacre from iconic Beyond (HK), an early June 4th inspired song from Tat Ming Pair, a now banned song from Jacky Cheung 張學友 (HK), a protest song for the students from Andy Summer 夏韶聲 (HK), onto songs from 1989 with a poem by then Beijing student leader Wang Dan 王丹 performed by Tom Chang 張雨生 (Taiwan), an initial reaction to the massacre from the cream of Hong Kong's Entertainment Stars, then on to songs recorded just before the June 4th killings, with Qinghua U 清华大学 students parodies of songs, one from Cui Jian 崔健 (PRC), ending the tribute programme with a cover of Cui Jian's "The Last Gun" 最後一槍 from Li Zhi. Lest we forget, enjoy.
