This week World Vibes devotes the entire two hour show to our Chinese New Year Special ! Saturday will be the first day of the New Year of the Rat and so we’ve rifled through the archives for our Featured China Rock Album released on a previous Year of the Rat, along with Classic New Year Songs from the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong ! Our first hour starts with a 70’s classic from Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) and Liza Wang (汪明荃) (HK), then our first song from Sichuan born Wang Lei (王磊)’s second album Night (夜) released in 1996, year of the Fire Rat for our 2020 Year of the Metal Rat, and in between his album songs, all strangely related to the theme of the rat in calligraphy and meaning, we hear more CNY Songs with an 80’s classic from Sam Hui (許冠傑)(HK), a Minnan dialect (閩南話) ode to the ‘Ancestral Village’ from Ju Pi Tou (豬皮頭) (Taiwan), the 90’s Anodize with a Cantonese version of the same (HK), ending the first hour with a song on ‘The Big Bad Wolf’ possibly related to the Rat by way of the Weasel in Chinese (鼠狼)from our featured album. A cornucopia of classics and discoveries, enjoy !
Our second hour continues our celebration of New Year of the Rat in music starting with a rare song Chinese on the ‘Spring Festival’ from the ‘Grandfather of China Rock’ Cui Jian (崔健) (China), then our next track, the title track on a ‘Conversation of GuangZhou Rats’ from our Fire Rat 1996 featured album ‘Night’ from the ‘Cui Jian of the South’ Wang Lei, and in between more album tracks we hear a Disco Spring song from then Hong Kong based Lo Dayou (羅大佑) (Taiwan), another song specifically dedicated to the Spring Festival from a later album from Wang Lei, an early 10’s classic from Sam Hui, an ambivalent ambient ode from moody Dou Wei (窦唯)(China), a happy CantoPop 10’s classic from brother Ricky Hui (許冠英) (HK), ending the hour and the show with a last award-winning song from our featured album.
