On 5 February, Live on 4 presents Beethoven's Ninth Symphony featuring the Bavarian Radio Symphony joined by members of the Dresden State Orchestra and MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony, and the Bavarian Radio Choir joined by members of the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphomy Choir and the Leipzig Philharmonic Children's Choir, conducted by the BRSO's then-chief, Colin Davis. Soloists are Elisabeth Hallberg, soprano; Marilyn Schmiege, mezzo-soprano; Klaus König, tenor; and Jan-Hendrik Rootering, bass. The twist is that the performance was given in Dresden on 25 November 1989, two weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Live on 4 on 11 February comes mostly from a recital given by baritone Benjamin Appl with pianist Graham Johnson in January 2015, performing Beethoven's almost completely obscured genre: his lieder. The programme's finale comes from a 2008 concert; soprano Anja Harteros sings Beethoven's concert aria Ah! perfido, with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marek Janowski.

The 19 February Live on 4 programme continues the very positive anniversary journey of discovery with two Beethoven's little-known works: twin cantatas, the first On the Death of the Emperor Joseph II, the second On the Accession of the Emperor Leopold II, both from the year 1790, when Beethoven was still a student in Bonn. It's not clear if they were ever performed during his lifetime; the first documented performance of the memorial cantata wasn't until 1884. Our recording comes from a concert given in 1993 with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Karl Anton Rickenbacher, with soloists Bodil Arnesen, soprano and Alan Titus, baritone. Completing that programme is a 1985 performance, by the same Orchestra but with the RIAS Chamber Choir and pianist Alicia de Larrocha, of the popular Choral Fantasy, conducted by Riccardo Chailly.

The series concludes on 26 February with a 2018 performance of what is arguably Beethoven's greatest work, the Missa solemnis, which he at first planned for the investiture of his friend and pupil, Archduke Rudolph of Austria, as Cardinal-Archbishop of Olomouc in what became the Czech Republic. But the work grew in scale until it dwarfed any mass that had previously been written; after almost four years, long after Rudolph had been installed in his post, Beethoven emerged with a work too monumental to play a supporting role in any sacred ritual, but one which itself has the character of a religious rite, or perhaps a secular one in religious dress. Marek Janowski again conducts, this time with the Kammerakademie Potsdam and the Berlin Radio Choir and soloists Iwona Sobotka, soprano; Jennifer Johnston, contralto; David Butt Philip, tenor; and Franz-Josef Selig, bass.
