為了起路，可以去到多盡？19世紀中期，居住於法國南部韋科爾高原上的村民，為打破與世隔絕的宿命，決定開闢一條連接高原與山下市鎮的路。開路期間，工人竟不惜冒生命危險，以游繩方式，於陡峭的山崖間徒手放置炸藥，目的只為加快完成速度，可見他們的決心。 

同樣抱着「自己社區自己救」信念的還有19世紀初的聖地牙哥商人－艾德‧費查。當時，聖地牙哥由於缺乏一條直達東邊的公路，令當地經濟發展停滯不前，費查於是出資興建一條橫越大沙漠、通往阿利桑拿州的公路，而這條公路竟然是木板路！其後，這條路更成為當地著名旅遊景點。
