Budget Surplus and Preview of Budget 2018 / Flu Outbreak

    主持人:Hugh Chiverton and Jim Gould

On Thursday's Backchat we're talking about what's expected to be a massive budget surplus for the current financial year,  and government spending priorities. Some analysts are forecasting a surplus of about $170 billion, which is more than 10 times the original official prediction. That would swell the fiscal reserves to more than $1.1 trillion. The Financial Secretary, Paul Chan, has been seeking submissions from the public on what to include in his 2018 budget speech, due to be delivered on February 28.  So what should be done with all this cash?  Where should the spending priorities be? Developing the economy, supporting health care, housing, education, the environment, or all of these areas?  What about tax cuts, or tax rebates?  And should we be sitting on such large reserves, when the Basic Law requires Hong Kong "to strive to achieve a fiscal balance". Leave a message, or email us at backchat@rthk.hk, or call us on 23388266. After 9.20, kindergartens and primary schools close early for the holidays, amid the flu outbreak.
