Art inspired by music. Music inspired by art.
We know that artists can take emotions and atmospheres evoked by sound and interpret them into something visual, as can composers recreate with sound, images from a canvas or other form of visual art. The possibilities are endless… The Culture Show continues to make connections between these two art forms.

This week we feature one of the most famous examples of music created from art - Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. The untimely death of the promising Russian artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, prompted Mussorgsky to write his ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ that presents the idea of the viewer walking through a gallery. A ‘Promenade’ reflects the movement from artwork to artwork, and Mussorgsky structures the suite in a way which represents the viewer’s progress through an exhibition of Hartmann’s work.
Many pianists have rearranged the work in order to expand its pianistic timbres. Vladimir Horowitz made, by many accounts, an ingenious arrangement, and his inspired Leif Ove Andsnes to contemplate his own. We will hear Andsnes's new version.
