HK Stories – Detour to Happiness

Are you happy? Some people feel that happiness is out of their reach, and some people dare not say that they are happy because they feel indebted or they are not perfect. Ten individuals, who had gone through the trough, or even on the edge of death, took the rugged detours, and experienced the true meaning of happiness. This happiness does not need others’ approval, this happiness brings them strength, and this happiness enables them to go further, and even allows them to see the good things. Based on their own experience, they encourage us not to draw back when encountering difficulties. The sun is always here, and it is only temporarily covered by dark clouds. May be we should also feel the happiness of the moment, even if it is only a small fortune, it is still gratifying.

HK Stories – Detour to Happiness
Episode 10
Rebirth from Imprisonment

“I found my passion and direction from my experience of imprisonment, and freedom lets me fulfil different plans, this is happiness!”

Rizzy PENNELLI is 27 years old. He is now a freelance physical trainer, and at the same time he runs an online shop selling Italian food. In his free time, he organises activities to collect books and letters for prisoners, and also carries out projects to train rehabilitated offenders to become physical trainers. Rizzy is now having a lot of plans and living a fulfilling life. He recalled that 6 years ago, he held a lax attitude, even if he had plans and ideas, he would never put them into action; now he is a person who acts efficiently putting every plan in his mind into practise. He becomes a proactive person because of the 2 years he spent in prison.

Rizzy studied aircraft engineering at university, and returned to Hong Kong from the United Kingdom after graduation. He was then arrested for a case of explosives, and was on remand for one and a half year before his trial. The young man, who was then 21 years old, had to learn to adapt to the harsh environment and the complicated interpersonal relationships in prison. If one is doing nothing day after day, one would be demoralised easily. Rizzy did not want to waste a single second of the time he was in custody, therefore he read and wrote letters; and later he found his passion in calisthenics, which gave him the biggest motivation and target. During the time of imprisonment, he also reflected on his relationship with his parents. His parents’ persistence and care made him realise that communication was a must in a family.

Looking back to his 26 months of imprisonment, Rizzy understands that one’s attitude determines one’s fate. He lived a free life when he was studying in the United Kingdom, but he could not find the joy and motivation to learn, and he felt lost; on the contrary, although he lost his freedom and lived a hard life when he was in prison, he recognised his goals and adjusted himself to face the hardship. He has finally overcome the adversity and was reborn for a new life.
