Alleged language discrimination on a Hong Kong-bound flight / Cheung Chau Bun Festival

On Thursday’s Backchat we’re talking about the sacking of Cathay cabin crew who were apparently caught on tape disparaging a mainland passenger. An audio clip that has sparked outrage on mainland social media contains what seems to be a conversation between cabin crew poking fun at a passenger who asked for a 'carpet' instead of a 'blanket' in English. The airline has repeatedly apologised for the incident, and swiftly sacked three staff members. Chief Executive John Lee has expressed dismay at the apparent discrimination -- saying the incident was 'vile', and that it has damaged Hong Kong's reputation for being respectful, courteous and inclusive. Is bias and discrimination a widespread problem in the service industry? Or is this an isolated case? How welcoming is our service industry to our guests and customers? After 9:45, we’ll talk about the Cheung Chau Bun Festival that will take place on Friday. Let us know what you think. You can leave a message here on our Facebook page, email us at backchat@rthk.hk, or give us a call on 23388266.

On Wednesday’s Backchat, we’re talking about the rise in electricity tariffs.
Both of Hong Kong’s power firms are raising fees, citing the surge in global energy prices and the energy crisis caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Taking into account rebates and fuel charges, tariffs for CLP Power customers are set to rise by 6.4 percent in January compared to now, while the figure is 5.5 percent for Hong Kong Electric.
The government says it asked the utilities to keep the fee hike to a minimum… but how will the higher prices affect the overall cost of living — especially for the needy? How much do promised subsidies mitigate this increase? Are high energy prices unavoidable in this age of heightened geo-political tensions?
After 9.15am, we’ll look at sexuality education in secondary schools after a study found that we are locals teaching is inadequate in this area.
And at 9.25am, we'll be joined by RTHK sports correspondent Atom Cheung with the latest on the World Cup 2022.
