Hong Kong's rising income gap / Use of Metaverse at university

On Friday’s Backchat, we look at Hong Kong’s wealth gap, after a new Oxfam report suggested that economic inequality here is at its worst in a decade.

It found the richest 10 percent make almost 60 times more than the poorest; a fifth of the population were below the poverty line as of the first quarter of the year; and economically inactive households – mostly elderly people and homemakers – make up a large proportion of the bottom 10 percent.
The charity says the government can help by creating more jobs for the underprivileged, and by reviewing Hong Kong’s minimum wage every year to make sure it keeps up with inflation.
Do you think the wealth gap is at its widest in a decade? Is inequality getting worse? What’s the best way to address the problem?
After 9:45am we dive into the Metaverse and see how two universities are using the virtual space to educate their students.

Suspected load-bearing wall in LOHAS Park / World No Tobacco Day

    主持人:Janice Wong and Paul Zimmerman

On Wednesday's Backchat, we're looking at building safety after a flat-owner at the LOHAS Park complex in Tseung Kwan O apparently knocked down a load-bearing wall without authorisation.

Sharp-eyed observers had noticed in a viral video showcasing renovations made in the flat that a load-bearing wall appeared to have been knocked down.

The Buildings Department is now investigating the matter, and have urged all property owners to comply with building regulations and seek professional advice before making any alterations to their flats.

What do you think of the incident? Are there enough safeguards against people knocking down support walls and how much of a safety risk is that?

After 9:45am, we'll mark World No Tobacco Day by looking at the latest government initiative to help smokers kick the habit.

9:00am-9:45am: Suspected load-bearing wall in LOHAS Park

9:00am-9:30am: Arthur Cheung, Chairman of the Building Surveying Division, The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors
