Hong Kong's rising income gap / Use of Metaverse at university

On Friday’s Backchat, we look at Hong Kong’s wealth gap, after a new Oxfam report suggested that economic inequality here is at its worst in a decade.

It found the richest 10 percent make almost 60 times more than the poorest; a fifth of the population were below the poverty line as of the first quarter of the year; and economically inactive households – mostly elderly people and homemakers – make up a large proportion of the bottom 10 percent.
The charity says the government can help by creating more jobs for the underprivileged, and by reviewing Hong Kong’s minimum wage every year to make sure it keeps up with inflation.
Do you think the wealth gap is at its widest in a decade? Is inequality getting worse? What’s the best way to address the problem?
After 9:45am we dive into the Metaverse and see how two universities are using the virtual space to educate their students.

Child abuse reporting / Mercy release of animals

    主持人:Janice Wong and Andrew Work

On Friday's Backchat, we're looking at the government's proposal to make it a legal requirement for childcare professionals to report suspected cases of serious child abuse to the authorities.

According to a Legco paper, professionals from the social welfare, education and healthcare sectors who frequently deal with children will be considered "mandated reporters".

They must file a report if they have reason to suspect a child has been seriously harmed, or is at risk.

Those who don't comply could face up to three months in prison and a HK$50,000 fine, though there'll be some exemptions – for example, for people who think someone else has already reported the same case.

After 9:45am, we'll talk about plans to ban the release of animals into unsuitable habitats.

9:00am-9:45am: Reporting of serious child abuse

9:00am-9:30am: Carol Szeto, CEO, Save the Children Hong Kong
9:00am-9:45am: Dr Patrick Cheung, Chairperson, Executive Committee, Against Child Abuse
9:00am-9:45am: Priscilla Lui, children's rights advocate and former Chair of the Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights

    9:45am-10:00am: Mercy release of animals

9:45am-10:00am: Paul Crow, Senior Conservation Officer, Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden
