Changes to the minimum wage / Closure of President Cinema in Causeway Bay

On Thursday’s Backchat we’re talking about a new system for setting Hong Kong’s minimum wage which will take economic growth and consumer prices into account and mean that it can never be cut back below its existing level in future.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun called these changes a "historic and challenging mission". But some employers say its unreasonable that it will become impossible to ever reduce the minimum wage even if times get tough for businesses. And unionists are unhappy about reported plans to increase the minimum wage by only HK$1.8 an hour this year, one of the lowest increases ever.
After 9:45, we look at Hongkongers' cinema going habits, following the closure of the almost six-decade-old President Cinema in Causeway Bay.

Support service for poor families / Cyclist Sarah Lee's retirement

    主持人:Janice Wong and Paul Zimmerman

On Wednesday’s Backchat, we’re looking at support services for poor families in Hong Kong – in the wake of a tragedy in which three young girls were killed.
Police have arrested the mother on suspicion of murder. She had lived with her three daughters, aged two, four, and five in a small flat in Sham Shui Po – one of Hong Kong’s poorest districts.
Police say the suspect had marital problems and was estranged from her husband. She was living on welfare and her family was an active case of an Integrated Family Service Centre operated by a non-governmental organisation.
The tragedy has brought back into the spotlight the issue of whether Hong Kong’s underprivileged – especially from ethnic minority groups – receive enough support. Can more be done to prevent similar incidents in future?
After 9:45, we’ll look at the retirement of Hong Kong cycling queen, Sarah Lee.
