Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China / New research on late treatment of strokes

For the first edition of Global Focus we're talking about Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to China.

President Xi Jinping called on the relations between China and Russia to be cherished and cared for by both sides, as the two neighbours seek to bolster economic ties.
Under a new agreement, the two countries are expected to deepen strategic partnership and reinforce their 75 years of diplomatic relations, a friendship Putin described as a "stabilising" force.
This year's visit also comes amidst high tensions over the war in Ukraine, with China poised to reinforce its involvement in brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Which sectors of the economy are most likely to benefit from this deepening cooperation? And can China bring the Russia-Ukraine conflict to an end? We'll find out.

In the last part of the programme, we learn more from a research looking into the effectiveness of late treatment of stroke.

Melting Himalayan glaciers / Enforcement against HK$2 transport subsidy fraud

    主持人:Andrew Work and Ada Wong

On Tuesday's Backchat, we'll discuss climate change and more specifically -- melting glaciers.

This comes after a report by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, or ICIMOD, found that the Himalayan glaciers, which provide critical water to nearly two billion people, are melting faster than ever before due to climate change.

According to the report, the glaciers disappeared 65 percent faster from 2011 to 2020 compared with the previous decade, and based on current emissions trajectories, the Nepal-based intergovernmental think-tank says the glaciers could lose up to 80 percent of their current volume by the end of the century.

It also predicts an increase in natural catastrophes as a result, including flash floods and avalanches that could displace millions unless we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions beyond target.

What do you make of this? Are these scenarios inevitable? Do we still have time to avoid such disasters from happening?

After 9:45, we'll get a transport analyst's take on the stepping up of law enforcement action against the abuse of the HK$2 fare subsidy schem.

    9:00am-9:45am: Melting Himalayan glaciers
