Hong Kong's road resilience in the face of extreme weather / Calls to accreditate sign language interpreters

On Wednesday's Backchat, we're talking about the impact of extreme weather on infrastructure.
A section of Clearwater Bay Road collapsed at the weekend, amid the heavy downpour which triggered landslides and caused flooding in several parts of the New Territories.
No injuries were reported, but the incident has again focused attention on the resilience of the territory's roads, with climate scientists warning that heavy rain storms will become a more common occurrence.
Authorities promised last year to improve drainage systems, but experts remain divided over the cost and feasibility of building new tunnels in rural areas.
How should town planners approach this challenge?
After 9:45, we discuss calls for accreditation of sign language interpreters, with some deaf defendants said to have been misinterpreted in court cases.

Mega events / Hong Kong Pet Show 2024

    主持人:Andrew Work and Mike Rowse

On Monday’s Backchat, we focus on the dozens of mega events Hong Kong will host in the coming months, and how much of a tourist draw they’ll be.

The city is scheduled to host more than 80 mega events in the first half of year — including sports, culture and arts along with trade shows.
The government’s also got its eye on attracting big names to perform in the city, including the likes of Beyonce and Taylor Swift, and it’s setting up a cross-departmental unit to try to cut red tape and make it easier for organisers to bring their attractions to Hong Kong.’
Are mega-events what we need to give the tourism sector a shot in the arm? Are big-name pop stars what we need to get people’s attention? Do we have the infrastructure needed to be a true mega-events capital?
After 9:45, we talk about the four-day pet show that’s been taking place over the weekend.
