Political turmoil in South Korea / Deepening rifts between US insurers and consumers

On this week's edition of Global Focus, we’re looking into the latest developments in Korean politics. President Yoon Suk Yeol is once again facing impeachment after surviving a motion tabled against him last week, over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law. In a defiant speech, the embattled leader vowed to “fight till the end”, and blamed what he called “anti-state forces”, referring to the opposition-controlled parliament.

The leader’s televised address came shortly after police attempted to raid the presidential office compound, as part of a probe leading to the arrest of key figures, including the country’s police chief and its former defence minister. Yoon himself is subject of a travel ban, with authorities not ruling out arresting the strongman if conditions are met.

In the second half of the programme, we’ll talk about deepening rifts between US citizens and insurance companies, following the assassination of an executive.

Improving housing quality / EMSD data leak

    主持人:Jenny Lam and Mike Rowse

On Monday's Backchat, we're talking about calls to improve public housing quality.

Think tank Our Hong Kong Foundation says it is now time to prioritise quality over quantity, as the average waiting time for a public flat is expected to drop from the current 5.8 years to 4.6 years by 2027. Estimates show that 35,000 public housing blocks will be completed each year throughout the next five years, which is above the government's target of 30,800.
The research organisation is recommending housing authorities to set-up a new mechanism which would see the size of public housing units steadily increase in the next five to 10 years.
Are our public estates enjoyable places to live in? Is it the right time to make changes? And besides size, what other features of public housing blocks need improvement?
After 9:45, we learn more from a cybersecurity expert on a data leak involving the personal details of 17,000 public housing tenants.

    9:05am-9:45am: Improving housing quality

9:05am-9:30am: Ryan Ip, Vice President and Co-Head, Public Policy Institute of Research, Our Hong Kong Foundation

9:05am-9:45am: Marvin Chen, Former President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects

9:30am-9:45am: Andy Kwan, Director of the ACE Centre for Business and Economic Research and former housing advisor
