Canada's tightening of immigration policies/ Financial Secretary Paul Chan's Saudi Arabia visit / Sotheby's duct-taped banana exhibit

On Friday’s Backchat, Global Focus talks about Canada’s tightening immigration policies.

The government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to lower the country’s immigration targets by up to 20 %, in a move it says will stabilise the housing and job markets.
The projected number of foreigners granted permanent residency will be cut from 485,000 this year to 395,000 in 2025 while the issuance of student visas will be capped further.
As a result of this new policy, the country’s population could shrink by 0.2 percent in the next two years and reduce the housing supply gap by around 670,000 units according to the government.
Critics see this move as a way for the incumbent Liberal administration to gain the hearts and minds of Conservative voters ahead of next year’s elections, where immigration is expected to be a determining factor.
At 9:30, we be discuss the highlights of Financial Secretary Paul Chan’s visit to Saudi Arabia.
After 9:45, we learn more about a viral duct taped banana sold by Sotheby’s at an estimate of US$ 1.5 million.

Salary Trends in the Greater Bay Area / Hurricane Milton and Extreme Weather

    主持人:Jenny Lam and Mike Rowse

On Monday’s Backchat, we’re talking about salary trends in the Greater Bay Area . The latest pay trend survey by the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management shows that the average salary for Hong Kong employees increased by 3.2 percent this year, while workers in other parts of the GBA received an average salary increase of 4.8 percent. But overall, the average salary for the GBA area has dipped slightly compared to a year earlier.

On the outlook for 2025 - salary increases are planned by many companies in Hong Kong and other parts of the GBA, but a significant number of companies remain undecided. The survey organiser, says global economic uncertainty is a factor for companies’ to consider when forecasting pay adjustments, and a more cautious approach is expected for next year. So what do these findings show when it comes to workforce competitiveness? Is salary still the main factor when it comes to attracting talent?

After 9.30, we discuss Hurricane Milton in the United States, that intensified from a minimal hurricane to a massive Category 5 in less than ten hours. What made it so fierce and unusual? We’ll find out.
