In this week's episode, we will talk about China’s Foreign Exchange Reform. Despite HKD’s official prohibition in mainland China, the hong kong currency was widely accepted and even preferred by mainland’s restaurant owners, shopkeepers, and taxi drivers, the Chinese authorities themselves also showed a preference for HKD. Professor Taomo Zhou from the National University of Singapore will tell us more about the pivotal chapter in the history of China’s foreign exchange reform. She was invited by The University of Hong Kong to give a talk entitled “Special Zone Currency: Shenzhen’s Monetary Experiment and China’s Foreign Exchange Reform.”

In this week's episode, we’ll continue to look at the work of Yu Ying-shih. He is one of China’s most famous historians and is known for his mastery of sources for Chinese history and philosophy. Professor Michael Puett from Harvard University will tell us how we can understand the emergence of capitalism by reviewing some of Professor Yu’s ideas. Professor Puett was invited by New Asia College, the Department of History of Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Museum of History to give us a talk entitled Culture and History: Yu Ying-shih, Weber, and Approaches to Comparative History.
