Professor Martin Kern - Rethinking Authorship in Early China, CUHK
In this week's episode, we will talk about authorship in early China. In pre-imperial China, individual authorship was not valued as much as the collective roles involved in the creation and interpretation of texts. Professor Martin Kern from Princeton University will shed light on the importance of text reception, performance and transformation and give us a new framework to think about textual agency and authority. Professor Kern was invited by the New Asia College and Department of Chinese Language and Literature of CUHK to give a talk entitled Rethinking Authorship in Early China, and we'll hear part of it this week.

Professor Duol Kim - Pre-modern Growth, Industrialization and Biological Living Standards of Japan and Korea, 1840 – 2023, HKU

In this week's episode, we will look into the living standards of pre-modern Japanese and Korean societies. Professor Duol Kim from Myongji University uses data on the height of Koryo dceased individuals who died on the street or in institutions without any acquaintances claiming the body, to explain the changes in biological living standards before and after port opening and modern industrialization of Japan and Korea. Professor Kim was invited by the University of Hong Kong to give a talk entitled Pre-modern Growth, Industrialization and Biological Living Standards of Japan and Korea, 1840 – 2023. We'll hear part of this talk today.
