Activity in China’s private services continued to contract in May but at a slower pace. The China's Caixin Services PMI registered a reading of 41.4 in May, rebounding from a 26-month low of 36.2 in the previous month but missing economists’ forecasts of 46. It’s the third straight month of contraction as COVID-19 lockdown measures halt activity in the sector. It’s also the second-sharpest drop in the sector since February 2020.

Business activity in Hong Kong’s private sector expanded in May at the fastest pace in more than a decade after the government eased Covid restrictions. The S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 54.9 in May, up from 51.7 in April. It was the second straight month of expansion after three months of contraction to start the year.
Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, Paul Chan, said on Monday the government has no plans to review the Hong Kong dollar's peg to the greenback, saying it's crucial to maintaining international confidence in doing business in the SAR. Speaking at a Legco panel meeting,  he said the linked exchange rate system has been working effectively since 1983 and the administration has no plans to review whether it should be changed and have the Hong Kong dollar pegged to other currencies, such as the yuan, instead of the US dollar.
Speaking at the same Legco panel, Mr. Chan also reported that Hong Kong’s economic situation was stabilising. He noted that the value of total retail sales, which fell 7.6% year-on-year in the first quarter, climbed 11.7% in April. He said it's vital to have the Covid-19 situation under control for the economy to keep its momentum.
On today’s Money Talk, we’re joined by Patrick Bennett from CIBC World Markets and Quentin Webb of the Wall Street Journal. With a view from Japan is John Beirne at the Asian Development Bank Institute.
