Business optimism in China has tumbled to an all-time low according to a new survey from the US-China Business Council, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organisation representing 270 American companies, whose goal is promoting trade between the United States and China. 96% of respondents in the annual survey reported negative effects on their businesses, including halting investment, lost revenues and disruption to supply chains. Companies cited coronavirus-related lockdowns, US-China relations, Beijing’s crackdown on internet platforms and new data security laws as their top concerns.

China has put the Huaqiangbei district of Shenzhen, a global electronics sourcing centre, into lockdown from Monday to Thursday. All workers are required to work from home during the period and take a nucleic acid test every day. 24 metro stations in the city were also ordered to close.
Latest government figures showed private home prices in Hong Kong have fallen to their lowest in two-and-a-half years. According to data from the Rating and Valuation Department, the private domestic price index in July came in at 376.1, the lowest reading since February 2020. July's figure was down 1.6% from 382.4 the month before.
The European Union is preparing to intervene in its energy market to dampen soaring power costs and eventually to break the link between gas and electricity prices. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was working on “emergency intervention” as well as structural reforms to the power market, which could allow cheaper renewable energy to help set electricity prices.
On today’s Money Talk, we’re joined by Patrick Bennett from CIBC World Markets and Sunil Kayshap at FinMet. With a view from Japan is John Beirne from the Asian Development Bank Institute.

Patrick Bennett, Macro Strategist at CIBC World Markets suggests that the Fed’s attempts to achieve a ‘soft landing’ for the economy are quite difficult to pull off due to inflationary pressures across the globe.

Sunil Kayshap, Director at FinMet notes that investors are worried about the fall in the Chinese yuan, and thinks that negative market sentiment and consumer confidence are some of the contributing factors.
