The focus, this week is on The Cavern Club in Liverpool when it opened it’s doors as a jazz club in 1957, and the acts who performed there before The Beatles made the place world famous: Kenny Ball, big Bill Broonzy, Terry Lightfoot, The Merseysippi Jazz Band, Ackerman Bilk making his debut, and local skiffle group... The Quarrymen.
The hand-clapping sing-along selection for this Sunday morning comes from Fletcher Henderson in 1925. One of the unluckiest musicians in the business has to have been Smiley Lewis; Colin explains why, after spinning the 1953 original recording of Blue Monday. Also this week, there is an easy rocker from Stan Kenton and his orchestra playing Duke Ellington, you’ll have to get your Charleston shoes on for Jimmy Wornell’s Hot Blue-Bottles, and a classic tear-jerker from Vera Lynn.
