Celebrating 50 years of Fine Music Broadcasting, Radio 4 presents a more-than-just-music concert rooted in Eastern and Western culture for this year’s French May Arts Festival.
Olivier Messiaen, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, considered himself first and foremost a keen bird watcher, then a rhythmicien and only lastly an organist. These life passions are the backbone of his masterpieces like Quatre Études de rythme.
In 1984, the long-retired French composer Olivier Messiaen took on another protégé, Qigang Chen.
“Messiaen was the first person who encouraged me to compose truthfully and find myself.” Rooted in the essence of Peking Opera, the unique tapestry of Chinese and Western components in Qigang Chen’s Wu Xing and Instants d’un Opera de Pekin, aligned perfectly with the notion of his mentor.

1984 年,早已退休的梅湘收下最後一位徒弟——陳其鋼。
陳寫道 :「梅湘是第一個鼓勵我如實寫作,並找回自己的人。漸漸地,作為一個中國人,我發現原來我自己國家的傳統音樂如此豐富多彩,與西方文化截然不同。」在父親的薰陶下,京劇成了陳其鋼的根,師承梅湘,在法國生活多年,他自稱是移植法國的中國樹,他的作品能夠深刻體現中國的有感而發和西方的有理而發,其中《五行》、《京劇瞬間》等均為東西韻味兼備的佳作。
作為二十世紀其中一位最具影響力的作曲家,梅湘先將自己定位為研究雀鳥的人,其次是專研節奏的和彈管風琴的人。他虔誠的天主教信仰和愛好成就了他帶神秘感,複雜而又讓人印象深刻的獨特創作,如《鳥類誌》、《聖嬰二十默想》、《四首節奏練習曲》。
