Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was appointed music director of Naple's prestigious opera house, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, at the age of 23. For the first opera he composed in that position, he chose to set his music to a libretto by Giovanni Schmidt on the subject of Elizabeth, Queen of England, a fictitious account of the love relationship between the Queen and Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. The work's premiere in October 1815 was a tremendous success which established Rossini's international reputation as the most sought-after opera composer in the bel canto style.

The recorded performance to be broadcast in this programme boasts of cast of magnificent singers led by the great Catalan soprano Monserrat Caballé and tenor José Carreras. Other principal singers include English soprano Vaterie Masterson and Italian tenor Ugo Benelli. The Ambrosian Singers and the London Symphony Orchestra are conducted by Gianfranco Masini.
