Striking Sounds: the visceral power of percussion — Elise Liu
Percussion is one of the most diverse, bold and adventurous groups of instruments. In the past century, its endless sonic possibilities and diverse cultural origins captured the imagination of countless composers, spurring the rapid growth of a solo and chamber repertoire. In the coming four episodes, percussionist Elise Liu retraces the meteoric rise of these instruments, introducing audiences to striking masterpieces which brought solo percussion and the percussion ensemble to the forefront of classical music.
Listeners will be introduced to the unconventional instrumentation in the works of Igor Stravinsky, George Antheil and Béla Bartók; as well as the experimentation of timbral possibilities and rhythmic complexity in the works of Edgar Varese, John Cage and Iannis Xenakis. The focus is then shifted to the development of modern percussion ensembles, where the collaboration with contemporary composers has led to a plethora of new music in a vast array of styles. In addition to renowned and established groups such as Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Amadinda Percussion Group and NEXUS, the program will feature GRAMMY Award-winning ensembles including So Percussion, Third Coast Percussion and Sandbox Percussion.
Tune in to discover the fascinating world of percussion - a formidable force of innovation that has become synonymous with the futuristic and the avant-garde
