DAVID HOCKNEY AND THE STAGE
In this episode we look at David Hockney and his forays into set design. While many of us are familiar with his paintings, his talents were not confined to this medium. His intense love affair with opera has produced some of the most iconic set and stage designs of the modern era.
In this episode, Job: A Masque for Dancing, a one-act ballet produced in 1931 based on the Book of Job and inspired by the extremely graphic images created by William Blake with music by Vaughan Williams. The horrors endured by Job are depicted in some of the composer's most driven dissonant music interspersed with ancient dances of a stately demeanour, creating music for a ‘masque’ lacking only the speech and song of its traditional form.
