For four decades, the Highways Department has played a pivotal role in shaping Hong Kong’s highly interconnected and accessible road and rail network. Its dedicated efforts in planning, maintaining and enhancing this network have not only supported economic development, but also provided public mobility and convenience of social activities. With a focus on safety, accessibility and innovation, the Department has evolved over these years. As it moves forward, embracing smart technology and sustainable practices, the Department continues to pave the way for a more accessible and convenient city. The two-episode series will illustrate this 40-year and ongoing journey of the Highways Department.

Hong Kong’s extensive road and railway networks have laid a solid foundation for growth and development. For four decades, the Highways Department has upheld a spirit of professionalism and innovation. From the Tsing Ma Bridge and Ting Kau Bridge, to the high-speed rail and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge which link the Mainland, as well as the newly opened Central Kowloon Bypass and the upcoming Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Rail Link, they are integral to Hong Kong’s overall development, connecting and enriching life at every step.
