Chronicle of Notable Chinese
Chronicle of Notable Chinese
The life of Dr. Henry Hu Hung Lick is a perfect embodiment of scholarship, moral integrity, and profound compassion. In his early years, he traveled to Paris and the United Kingdom, earning his Doctorate in Law and qualifying as a barrister respectively. He subsequently practiced in Hong Kong, earning immense respect within the legal profession. During the 1960s and 1970s, he actively campaigned for the legal status of the Chinese language and championed nine-year free education, opening up more equitable opportunities for society. In their fifties, he and his wife, Dr. Chung Chi Yung, resolutely relinquished their fame and fortune, dedicating the vast majority of their life savings and 35 years of their lives to establish Hong Kong's first private university—Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Their steadfast dedication to providing educational opportunities for young people has created a legacy of nurturing talent that spans over half a century. From humble beginnings in a modest three-storey house in Happy Valley to today’s fully-fledged Braemar Hill campus, this journey testifies not only to the rise of a university, but also serves as a portrait of an educator's lifelong perseverance—safeguarding the pure conviction of "serving the nation through education" amidst a bustling metropolis. Featuring Interviews with Dr. Hu Fai Chung (Son of Dr. Henry Hu Hung Lick; President, Hong Kong Shue Yan University) Professor Catherine Sun Tien Lun (Senior Vice President, Hong Kong Shue Yan University) Dr. Kaman Lee Ka Man (Associate Vice President and Alumna, Hong Kong Shue Yan University) Dr. Francis Cheung (Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors and Alumnus, Hong Kong Shue Yan University)

Don Giovanni is the result of the second fruitful collaboration between the musical genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and the brilliant literary talent of Lorenzo da Ponte (1749-1838). The opera had its world premiere at the Italian Opera Theatre of Prague in 1787, following their triumph of the previous year, The Marriage of Figaro.   This work, on the subject of the scandalous attempts of the Spanish nobleman to seduce numerous women and his final punishment by being dragged to the fire of hell, owes much of its success to the superior quality of the music as well as its unique blending of comic and serious elements and the rapid flow of dramatic action. The other decisive factor in the opera's immense popularity is the fascinating character of the Don himself, the blasphemer and the libertine, whose amorous adventures endear him to the men and his irresistible charm to the women among the audiences.   Our recording features the bass Roger Soyer as Don Giovanni, soprano Cheryl Studer as Donna Anna, soprano Carol Vaness as Donna Elvira, messo-soprano Susanne Mentzer as Zerlina, bass Samuel Ramey as Leporello, and tenor Frank Lopardo as Don Ottavio. The Scottish Opera Chorus and the English Chamber Orchestra perform under the baton of conductor Daniel Barenboim.
