On Friday's Backchat: The housing shortage, and a spate of invasive Group B Streptococcus cases.

Our main topic is the new law just passed by Legco that will limit rent increases for subdivided flats to 10 percent… at the end of a two-year contract. But some lawmakers are concerned that there’s no regulation on the initial rent level.

And Housing minister Frank Chan also raised eyebrows in the council when he acknowledged that it would take as long as 20 years to bring waiting times for public flats down to three years.

So how is the government doing on housing for the grassroots? Is there enough short-term help for people?

After 9.15am, we’ll be looking at dozens of people who’ve recently caught Group B Strep infections… and the role of fresh fish in the outbreak…

On Friday's Backchat, promoting Hong Kong; Paralympic.

The government is planning to roll out an overseas campaign later this year to promote the city as the “best place in Asia to live, work and invest in.”

It came after authorities paid US$5.7million, approximately HK$44.3 million, to global PR company Consulum last June on its “Relaunch Hong Kong” initiative.

The company – which controversially did publicity work for Saudi Arabia – conducted market research that found us to be a “cosmopolitan, diverse, dynamic and connected” city.

How should we promote the image of Hong Kong overseas? How do we maintain ourselves as ‘Asia’s world city’? What are our unique selling points for visitors and investors?

After 9.15am, we’re discussing the Paralympics, set to start on August 24. Can we expect another successful Games?
