Pay rises for civil servants and a shorter work week; Sinovac's Omicron-targeted vaccine trial

On Wednesday's Backchat, we will look at pay rises for civil servants, and the merits — or lack thereof — of a shorter work week.
The new executive council is proposing a 2.5-percent pay rise for civil servants — far lower than the recommendations from the Pay Trend Survey Committee based on a survey of private sector pay. Civil service chief Ingrid Yeung explained the decision for a smaller pay hike was made after taking into account a variety of factors including the state of the economy, and the government’s fiscal position.
What do you think? Is 2.5 percent the right figure? How will this affect the private sector, if at all? And what do you make of New World Group’s decision to give some of its staff half a day off on Friday for two months this summer? It’s designed to be a family-friendly measure to improve the well-being of staff.
So is a 4.5-day work week the future? Or is it just not practical?
After 9:15am, we'll look at a new clinical trial by Sinovac of a new vaccine specifically targeting Omi-cron.

On Monday's Backchat, CPC’s central committee meeting and wild boars.

Tuesday morning our time President Xi Jinping will hold a virtual meeting with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, which it's hoped will lead to more stability amid increased tensions between the world's two largest economies.

It comes after the Chinese Communist Party passed an historic resolution last Thursday which places President Xi Jinping on a level with former leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.

The resolution outlined the challenges and successes of the party over the last 100 years in taking forward the development of the nation. It also endorsed the president's policies on Hong Kong and Taiwan as part of his major political achievements.

After 9.15am, we are discussing the management of Hong Kong's wild boar population, after increasing encounters with the animals straying into built-up areas.
