Proposed salary increase for civil servants / Privacy concerns over call filtering apps

On Monday’s Backchat, we’re talking about proposals to increase civil servants’ wages. Public sector workers could see their salary increase by up to 5.47 percent if the government approves results of the latest pay trend survey.

The survey — which gathered data from more than 110 private firms — points to rises of 4.01 percent for senior civil servants, 4.32 percent for middle-ranking workers and 5.47 percent for junior staff.
Civil servant unions have expressed support towards the proposals, citing the need for the public service to remain competitive amidst growing competition from the private sector.
    Would an increase be justified?
After 9:45, we look into the privacy risks of using call filtering apps.

    2023 Policy Address review

    主持人:Danny Gittings and Paul Zimmerman

On Thursday's Backchat, we discuss the new policy address.

Delivering his policy blueprint at the Legislative Council on Wednesday, the Chief Executive John Lee outlined a range of measures — from HK$20,000 handouts to promote fertility to cutting stamp duties to help boost the local stock and property markets, and the setting up of a task force to address the problem of subdivided flats.
In his more than three hour long speech, Mr Lee also said patriotic education will be introduced to help strengthen national identity and appreciation of Chinese culture among people here.
And on the issue of governance, Mr Lee said his administration would complete legislation for safeguarding national security under Article 23 of the Basic Law next year.
So what do you think of the measures? How effective will they be? And what else would you have liked to see?
