Asian Financial Forum / Where are Asian economies headed? / Construction accidents

On Wednesday’s Backchat, we’re looking into where the Asian economies are headed, and whether businesses in the region are prepared for a potential return in US tariffs.

Speaking at the Asian Financial Forum, Financial Secretary Paul Chan urged Hong Kong businesses to seize opportunities in emerging markets, citing the Middle East, ASEAN, and the Global South as examples.
Last week, the minister led a 130-strong delegation to Jakarta and met with top ASEAN officials, discussing ways to facilitate trade with the 10-member block.
With looming uncertainties over US President-elect Donald Trump’s policy direction, some argue that now is the time for Asian economies to come together and strengthen multilateral cooperation. Can Hong Kong be the super-connector?
In the last part of the show, we discuss calls by labour groups to better protect industrial workers, following two separate construction accidents in less than 24 hours.

Dead whale in Tai O / Busan meeting on plastic pollution / Plummeting heart transplant figures

    主持人:Danny Gittings and Mike Rowse

On Tuesday’s Backchat, we’re talking about the stranded whale that died in the waters off Tai O.

Experts say a bag found in the whale’s digestive system likely contributed to the death, and there were also superficial injuries on its carcass.
It’s not the first time a whale has been found dead in Hong Kong waters, with a young male dying last summer from suspected propeller injuries.
So have our waters become too dangerous for marine mammals? Will government proposals to ban some whale-watching activities help?
After 9:30, we’ll speak to environmentalists who are back from a conference in South Korea on how to reduce plastic pollution.
After 9:45, we’ll talk to a cardiologist, as Hong Kong is on track to record its lowest number of heart transplants since 2011.

9:05am-9:30am: Dead whale in Tai O
