Founded in 1846, the Hong Kong Club was originally a place for “gentlemen” to socialise; its members even organised horse racing before the Jockey Club was established. Sadly, few pre-World War II records survived. In this 2017 episode, journalist and author Vaudine England tells Annemarie Evans her archival discoveries, including the identities of the very first “members of the local community” , the debate over admitting “ladies”, and so on.

Molly Odell, daughter-in-law of the late impresario Harry Odell who founded the State Theatre in North Point, was born in Iraq i n1931. She spent her formative years in Japan, moved to Shanghai as a teenager, and then, in Hong Kong, where she met her husband.
