However, this year, they have taken centre stage as China leveraged its dominance in this sector to counter US tariffs. While these minerals are not especially scarce, their extraction presents significant challenges, making them "rare" in terms of accessibility for industries like advanced weaponry, robotics, aerospace, electric vehicles, and mobile phones.
