This week, Chloe Feng and Brian Wong explore Chinese mainland animation.
A low-budget film, Niu Lai, or Arrival of the Ox, became an unexpected summer hit - drawing crowds for all the wrong reasons, as viewers wanted to see just how bad it was. After a slow start, memes and clips helped it surge in popularity.
Other than Niu Lai, the Eight Immortals animation was also one of the most watched films during the summer holidays on the Chinese mainland. Chloe and Brian chat with film critic Elizabeth Kerr about the animations.

This Saturday on Trending China, Chloe Feng and Brian Wong explores the Chinese mainland's rapidly rising biotech sector and medical tourism scene. The numbers speak for themselves: China welcomed 1.3 million medical tourists last year - up 74% from 2022 - offering efficient, quality care at lower costs. Meanwhile, Chinese biotech outlicensing deals hit a record $60 billion in the first quarter of this year, a 70 percent year-on-year surge, driven by massive infrastructure and a streamlined drug-approval system.
Chloe and Brian speaks to Mark Lotter, founder and CEO of Nuance Biotech, from Shanghai, who will break down how the mainland is positioning itself as a global healthcare powerhouse.
