"Qingming Shanghe Tu" or Along the River During the Qingming Festival, is one of the Chinese mainland’s most treasured paintings-capturing life in one of the world's most prosperous cities from nearly 1,000 years ago.
Painted as a Song Dynasty handscroll by famous Chinese painter Zhang Zeduan, it shows the daily lives of people across different social classes, from the wealthy to the working poor-along with the landscapes and activities of the capital, Bianjing (today Kaifeng in central Henan).
It's often called "China's Mona Lisa"-and now, a new, modern high-tech project is giving it an even bigger spotlight. A scholar in Hong Kong is using Al tools to create an interactive game centered on the artwork-so more people can explore the figures, details, and stories in an immersive way. So how can Al help us learn history differently? And why does Qingming Shanghetu matter so much in Chinese history?
