This week on VCT : A collection of very popular 78rpm discs that were sold at hardware stores and news agents at very affordable prices across the UK. One of the biggest producers and sellers of these titles were Woolworths, and they came in a variety of novelty sizes, 6, 7, 8 and 10-inch sized discs, featuring names like Alfredo & His Band on the Edison Bell Radio label, Bertini & The Tower Blackpool Dance Band on the Eclipse label and, of course, many more. Plus, a big Hong Kong song from 1956 on the Embassy label.

This week we find out how band leader Ken ‘’Snake Hips” Johnson got his nick name, we feature superb drummer and bandleader Ben Pollack and his Park Central Orchestra. And, what an orchestra, as Pollack had a superpower of spotting great talent… like Benny Goodman, Harry James, and Glenn Miller, earning him the title ‘Father of Swing’. Listen up for the big, romantic, baritone voice of Andy Russel with a 1944 best seller, and Harry Parry with his Radio Rhythm Club Sextet setting the tone for your Sunday morning.
