Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
The Modernaires set things up this week, when they break out The Jingle Bell Polka. Colin dips into his Christmas collection to bring us another bumper pack of festive tunes from the 20s to the 50s, including a full-on tearjerker from Phillis Robins, and all out laughs with Homer And Jethro. Plus, listen to The Hoosier Hot Shots and the cast of the movie White Christmas (in VistaVision!).
This week, an artist who, back in the 50s decided to quit dancing and become a singer, Jo-Ann Campbell, is featured on a 45rpm release ‘Happy New Year Baby’, setting us up for a collection of new year themed tunes from the 1920s to the 1950s. Dick Robertson, Lonnie
Johnson, Vaughn Monro, and many others, as we warm up for 2026.

Featuring one of Colin’s all time favourite band names this week. Boots And His Buddies are performing a Fats Waller classic. Big, mighty strings from Percy Faith with a track released on 78 and 45rpm that stayed at number one for weeks and weeks in 1953. And, we swing easy with Nina Simone who ‘can’t get out of this mood’.
